The classical song:
A search for unity between music and poetry
The classical song combines two forms of artistic expression: music and poetry. The aim of our intensive study of the musical score on the one hand and the poem on the other is to experience an internalised, immediate and accessible moment.
A French-German lied duo:
Daniel Sauer grew up in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm in Upper Bavaria, was a member of the Tölzer Knabenchor boys’ choir for many years and then completed his bachelor’s degree in singing in Augsburg. He is currently studying for a master’s degree in song performance at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
Steve Roy grew up in Paris, came to Munich to study philosophy and literature and train as a conductor, and then moved to Augsburg to study piano. He now conducts several orchestras, gives piano lessons and performs in various chamber music ensembles.
DANIEL SAUER, BARITONE

Daniel Sauer was born in Munich in 1999 and began taking singing lessons with the Tölzer Knabenchor choir at the age of seven. There he was greatly influenced by choir director Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden and voice coach Christian Fliegner. At the age of 11, he made his first appearances as one of the Three Boys in Mozart’s Magic Flute, including at the Staatstheater Bremen.
In addition to singing, he also took drum lessons from Arno Haselsteiner as a child and, after his voice broke, trumpet lessons from Reinhard Greiner.
In 2016, he began studying singing, initially as a junior student with Prof. Dominik Wortig at the Leopold Mozart College of Music at the University of Augsburg. During his studies, under the guidance of Carolin Danner, he discovered his passion for playing the piano, which he continues to pursue alongside singing to this day.
In 2022, he will be awarded the Culture Promotion Prize of the City of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, and in July 2023, he will complete his bachelor’s degree in Augsburg. He receives further important inspiration from Thomas Hampson, Mariette Witteveen and other lecturers in master classes and coaching sessions.
Since 2024, he has been continuing his studies in the master’s programme ‘Lied-Oratorio-Concert’ at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Prof. Florian Boesch and Prof. Karlheinz Hanser. He has discovered a great affinity in Vienna, particularly in relation to song and, associated with this, poetry. A highlight in this area is the performance of songs by Alexander von Zemlinsky in the baroque Schönbrunn Palace Theatre, accompanied by a symphony orchestra after an arrangement by Richard Dünser.
Nevertheless, the baritone also maintains his connection to the oratorio and opera repertoire with great interest and curiosity. Public performances as a baritone soloist, including in Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, are just as much a part of Daniel Sauer’s experience to date as his portrayal of various opera roles, including Aeneas in Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Pelléas in Marius Constant’s Impressions de Pelléas, based on Claude Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, and Marco in Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi.
STEVE ROY, PIANO

Steve Roy was born in Compiègne, France, in 1993. At the age of three, he made his first appearance on the piano at the Théâtre Mogador in Paris with his father’s jazz band, and at the age of seven he entered the Gustave Charpentier Conservatory in Paris. Thanks to the timetables at secondary school and grammar school, which were tailored to his musical requirements, he discovered a passion for a wide repertoire of piano and chamber music and chose percussion as his second instrument.
After graduating from high school, Steve Roy decided to pursue a double degree: he studied philosophy and literature at the Sorbonne University in Paris and at LMU in Munich, and he studied piano with a focus on chamber music at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris (CRR) in the class of Paul Meyer and Eric Le Sage. In 2011, he founded the Maurice Emmanuel Trio with Irina Seletskaya (clarinet) and Anastasia Vledouts (flute).
In 2014, he began to take an interest in conducting and attended numerous masterclasses with Maestro Konrad von Abel. He became increasingly involved with conducting and the phenomenological approach to music. In 2016, he took over the Concentus Merulae chamber choir and appeared as choir director in many concert series in the Munich area. Since 2023, he has been conducting the youth symphony orchestra and the project orchestra of the city of Langenau near Ulm, and since 2024 he has been president of the French association Musique & Phénoménologie.
His passion for piano playing also remains unbroken. From 2018 to 2023, Steve Roy is studying piano at the Leopold Mozart College of Music at the University of Augsburg (class of Prof. Christoph Hammer, Carolin Danner and Evgeny Konnov) and attending numerous masterclasses given by inspiring international pianists such as Pascal Devoyon, Billy Eidi, Elizabeth Sombart and Gilead Mishory. In 2023, he founded the Duo Symphonique for four hands with Rudolf Kuhn and in 2025 the song duo Liedwaerts with baritone Daniel Sauer.
His latest composition, ‘Four Haiku’ for flute, clarinet and bassoon, was published by Accolade Music Publishing. It is inspired by four short poems by Swedish poet and Nobel Prize winner Tomas Tranströmer.
